In these cases, it is essential to have a versatile, compact and easy-to-use packaging system, equipped with technologies of the latest generation in terms of IoT automation and energy saving.

What does SMI offer?

To meet these packaging requirements, SMI launched a whole range of machines with 90° single-lane infeed:

• ASW (Angular Shrink Wrapper) ERGON for packaging in film only, pad+film and tray+film
• ACW (Angular Carton Wrapper) ERGON for packaging in wrap-around cases / tray only
• AFCW (Angular Film Carton Wrapper) ERGON, combi model that groups the functions of an ASW shrink wrapper and an ACW case packer

Developed to manage a wide variety of formats for containers of different shapes and capacities on the same packaging line, the new SMI models with 90° infeed stand out for the reduced dimensions of the feeding system and the simplicity of the format changeover operations.

Correct laning of the containers

To smoothly feed the shaped containers, a system that maintains the correct orientation of the containers throughout the entire production process is required.


ASW, ACW and AFCW packers, equipped with a single-lane infeed conveyor, have the advantage of not requiring the presence of a divider for the laning of loose containers.

Ergonomics and safety

For SMI, innovation also involves ergonomics, which is important to protect the safety of the line operators.

The single-lane infeed, preferably positioned on the side opposite the operator, facilitates the correct laning of loose containers on the conveyor belt. Furthermore, for the models that are equipped with it, the cardboard magazine is located next to the operator, for a more ergonomic, simple, fast and safe cardboard loading.

Easy and fast format changeover

Thanks to the single-lane infeed, it is possible to process different types of containers, of different sizes, without having to resort to additional belt equipment.


Therefore, it is not possible to adjust the guides of the various lanes, with the advantage that format changes are easy and fast.
